Digital Workshop #5: Antigone, Myth and Contemporary Identity

This was designed as a preparatory workshop for the production Antigone, which participants were to see later during Camp Artistic. The workshop involved 17 participants and was facilitated by Divadlo DRAK.

Purpose and framework

The aim was to introduce young participants to classical tragedy through contemporary lenses, connecting ancient mythological themes—family conflict, destiny, power and responsibility—to present-day experiences of identity and social roles.

The workshop combined humour, reflection and participatory dramaturgy to make the material accessible and personally relevant.

Structure and working methods

The workshop unfolded through a series of dramaturgically linked steps:

  • Tuning into Ancient Greece: physical tableaux based on associations with Greek culture
  • Meet the characters: imagining Instagram profiles for characters from Oedipus
  • Oracle of Delphi: listening to prophecies and discussing the possibility of escaping fate
  • Puzzle the tragedy: reconstructing the fragmented storyline of Oedipus
  • Life after the tragedy: imagining the inner lives of Antigone and her siblings after the family’s collapse

Although technical difficulties limited the amount of visual material collected, discussion and imaginative engagement remained strong throughout the session.

Reflections

Participants showed a high level of curiosity and emotional engagement with the material, translating mythological narratives into contemporary questions of agency and identity. The workshop confirmed the value of dramaturgical framing as a tool for involvement, even in digital formats, and functioned as an effective bridge between online preparation and later in-person encounters.
